EXPECTED GOALS IN THE KINDERGARTEN

MOTOR CONTROL

To skip with ease, march to music, catch a ball, and enjoy rhythm.
To begin development of skill with paints, clay, crayons, scissors, and glue.
To dress him/herself independently.
To draw a recognizable person.
To build with large blocks and use large activity equipment.
To write the letters of the alphabet, words, and simple sentences.
To write numerals.

LANGUAGE

To speak in well formed sentences and develop a rich vocabulary.
To listen attentively and appreciate stories, poems, and rhythms.
To take part in simple dramatizations.
To begin to develop visual and auditory discrimination.
To speak one at a time.
To learn to speak before a group.
To become acquainted with a wide variety of stories.
Be able to tell a story from pictures.

GENERAL INFORMATION AND REASONING

Child should know his/her telephone number, address, name, age, birth date, parents' and teacher's name.
To recognize his/her printed name and to be able to print his/her first and last name.
Recognize numerals 1-31+, value of numbers 1-20, write numerals 1-31+.  Read number words zero to ten.
Count to 100.
Should recognize a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.
Should say the days of the week, months of the year and seasons.
Should know the colors and read color words.
Be able to recognize a circle, square, rectangle, triangle, diamond, and oval.

SOCIAL

To know location of material and work independently.
To walk quietly, stand orderly in a line.
To exercise emotional control, to show an attitude of kindness.
To participate and cooperate in a large group, as well as small group activities.
To show respect for authority and a growing consciousness of right and wrong.
To show a sense of responsibility, truthfulness and trustworthiness.
To accept criticism gracefully, to be a good sport, and show a sense of humor.
To settle his/her own difficulties.
To show an interest and appreciation for nature and environment.

HEALTH

To respond willingly to school health personnel.
To call upon help immediately upon injury to self or others.

To use the toilet properly and to wash hands before and after eating.
To learn basic nutritional needs for our bodies.

MUSIC

To sing simple melodies and short songs.
To show a growing appreciation of good music and pleasure in responding.

To know the difference between loud, soft, slow or fast.

ART

To know the primary and secondary colors.
To enjoy manipulation of art materials and be ready to use them correctly.
To be able to express him/herself creatively.

READING READINESS

Say the alphabet by rote.
Recognize the letters out of order and know the letter sounds.
Distinguish likenesses and differences and explain why things are alike or different.
Begin to develop skills in hearing the beginning consonant sound of words.
Read a controlled vocabulary.
Recognize rhyming and opposite words.
Children will orally blend words with phonograms example c an, p an, f an, m an.
