Accelerated Reader is a wonderful program designed to get kids reading.

In second grade, we want the children to do the reading (of AR books), with  mom or dad helping with unknown words.  In first grade, the parents could read to the children, but now the kids are better readers and are able to do the reading themselves.  Make sure the book is at the right reading level for them, so that they know most of the words without your help.  It's always a great idea for the parents to ask questions about the story to help check their understanding.  Even if you're not asking the same questions as are on the test, it will help!
