Welcome to the wonderful world of First Grade in Room 111 at Riverside Elementary School in Jackson, Minnesota!  My name is Mrs. Kroger and we have 22 great boys and girls in our classroom!

We read lots and lots of books in our classroom every day!  One of our favorite times of the day is Carpet Time right after lunch.  We enjoy talking, telling jokes, reading poems, talking about Character Traits, singing songs and of course,  READING books!!   We read picture books and enjoy listening to chapter books as well.

So far our chapter book read alouds include All About Sam, several Junie B. Jones books, Because of Winn Dixie, and we are currently reading James and the Giant Peach.

We do a program called Accelerated Reader in our classroom.  Students can check out books from the classroom, school library, and public library.  We encourage parents and family members to read the books aloud to the children, and at school we help them take the tests on the computer.

For the first quarter the goal for each first grader will be to get 2 Accelerated Reader points.  At the end of the quarter we will have a party to celebrate Reading for all the kids who reach the 2-point goal.  The required goal will increase to 5 points for the second, third, and fourth quarters, with parties at the end of each quarter for those who achieve the 5-point goal.  Many boys and girls will want to make a personal goal which is higher than 5 points and there are prizes for those kids!

As the school year unfolds, the boys and girls will be able to do more and more of the reading on their own. In addition, they will become familiar with the computer testing procedure and be able to take their tests without adult help.  It is fun and exciting to watch the students become independent readers and work toward their AR goals as the year progresses.
