SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY
AT PLEASANTVIEW ELEMENTARY
Every afternoon many students at Pleasantview Elementary receive speech or language therapy. Students may receive these services for a number of different reasons. Elementary students are often still working on learning how to produce correctly all of the different speech sounds. Some very common errors occur with the /s/ or /r/ sound. With a little help, students learn to produce these sounds correctly.
Language therapy may help students to understand better what they are hearing or reading. Therapy may also help students express their thoughts and ideas more effectively. Stuttering may be a problem for some students. Practicing "slow, smooth speech" can help to reduce the instances of stuttering.
Often students come to speech individually or in pairs. Speech sessions last for 20 minutes, and they are scheduled to interfere as little as possible with their academic class time.
When school begins each fall, all of the kindergarten students are screened by the speech therapist to see if any problems with speech or language are present. If a child does seem to be having some difficulty, the parent(s) are notified. No testing or therapy is undertaken without a parent's written permission.
