Exploratory Day --- last day of school

***  I plan to watch the future weather forecasts and we might swap days between PE class and Health class based on the weather!  Have the proper clothes/shoes on hand.

PE class --- Students will need tennis shoes, shorts, t-shirt, under garments, and socks for Physical Education class.  Extra warmer clothes are encouraged to have on hand for colder weather days.  Also needed will be a towel.  NO sandals or flip flops allowed!  Tentatively, PE class will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Grading will be on the following basis : A+  97%-100%, A   94%- 96.9%, A-  90%- 93.9%, B+  87%- 89.9%, B  84% - 86.9%, B-  80% - 83.9%, C+  77%- 79.9%, C  74 - 76.9%, C-  70% - 73.9%, D+  67%-69.9%, D 64%- 66.9%, D-  60%- 63.9%, and F  is below 60%. Participation, activity skills, sportsmanship/attitude/effort, and written tests will help determine the PE grade.  Please keep in mind that grading a student in PE class tends to be more subjective than in Health class.  I will strive to be fair and consistent.  I would like to think that the student will be given the benefit of the doubt.  Some of the objectives of  the class are to improve fitness, participate in games/activities, learn and enhance physical and social skills, and have fun.  Hopefully in the long run, the students will be fired up to carry some of the activities and whole fitness awareness behaviors throughout their lives.

Safety comes first and will be strived for.  Injuries and limiting medical conditions need to be reported to the teacher.  If a student can not participate in PE class longer than a week, a doctor's note is appreciated.  Nonparticipation in PE class could result in related written work requirements.  The Presidential Fitness Testing will happen in both the Fall and Spring for the 6th graders.

Please note :  There are two 6th grade PE/Health teachers.  Mrs. Shelly Hotzler will have 1st hour.  Mr. Mark Kocak will have 1st and 5th hours.  The classes will not necessary be on the same schedule, activity, material, etc.

Health class --- The textbook for health class is TEEN Health (a big red book).  This book is part of the Glencoe series that is used by the district in the health department.  The books are in good shape so please take care of them.  The book has 9 chapters.   Supplemental information will be included also, the monthly Current Health magazine in particular. Tentatively, health class will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

A pen and pencil, the textbook, student thin client, and the three ring binder that contains the planner and your paper is what is needed for health class.  Most of the daily work and quiz/test questions are of objective nature ( true/false, multiple choice, matching, and short answer). Late work is given partial credit.  If a student misses class the day an assignment is due or a quiz/test is to be taken, the work is to be turned in or the quiz/test taken the next class session that we meet.  If a student misses the day work is assigned, the work deadline is the second class meeting day after the absence.

The above information is not set in stone.  Be flexible.  Most students that have a good attitude, exhibit reasonable behavior, and give a good effort, end up learning more and have fun doing so!  If parents need to contact me, the best times are before/after school and during the morning from 11:15 -11:45 a.m. and the afternoon from 2:15 - 2:45 p.m.  Thanks and have a good year!
